King confirms key government appointments


Nuku’alofa, Tonga – New government appointments in key positions were announced today by the Prime Minister’s office, including new Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development. 

According to the media statement,  His Majesty, King Tupou VI on Monday, 25th January 2021 has approved the appointments of Mr. Tatafu Toma Moeaki as new Minister for the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development and the Hon. Samiu Kuita Vaipulu as Minister for the Ministry of Justice and Prisons, following recommendations from the Hon. Prime Minister. Hon. Rev. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, in accordance with Clause 51(2) and 51(4) of the Constitution, with effect from Monday 25th January, 2021.

“His Majesty also approved the appointment of Mr. Viliami Manuopangai Hingano to the position of Governor of Ha’apai with effect from the 26th January, 2021.”

Tatafu Moeaki recently held the position of Country Coordination Officer and Head of the ADB Country Office in Tonga. In 2013 he worked as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

Viliami Manuopangai Hingano is the former MP for Ha’apai 12 from 2014 – 2017, losing his seat in the previous election to Mo’ale Finau.
